Tibetan Tinshas (hand cymbals)
These beautiful hand chimes, hand bells, or hand cymbals are part of the Tibetan culture, and are called Tingshas, sometimes spelled as Ting-shas.
Traditionally used by monks to signal the beginning and ending of meditation, they have a wonderful clear, ringing sound that clears the mind. They are also used to clear chakras and to clear space as in fung-shui by their pure tone. Some people use them to begin and end a ceremony, using their clear, crisp sound that can carry through the noisiest room, yet is so refreshing in a small meditation space.
Cast of special metal alloy, these beautiful Tingshas are decorated with raised dragons (see enlargement below) and are connected with a leather strap. On the inside they contain the Sanskrit symbols Om, Ah, and Hum, representing Form, Speech and Mind or Heart.
The Tingshas are played by holding the leather cord just above each chime, using both hands, then striking them together - not hard, not too gently. The result is a beautiful, crisp, clear ringing that continues for some time due to the fact that our Tingshas are larger than most, and are heavier than many other types on the market.
